The ladies around the corner

The lady just that stands in the corner is big, her friend, partner or maybe sister is even bigger. They start working every midday….

Marseille is a very tolerrant city, one of many little stories about the city daily life.

The lady just that stands in the corner is big, her friend, partner or maybe sister is even bigger. They start working every midday. They are smiling and keep saying Bonjour to everyone (especially if its a man). Its only work (even though they stopped offering me their "merchendise" sometimes ago) but its still part of the environment. They eat in the restaurants around, the have a coffee behind the opera, just like me, and they talk with the neighbours, sometimes quite lenghtly. I never saw an actual customer, or someone interested, but somehow it doesn't seems to be the point. They are well dressed and never the same thing two days in a row, and even though quite big they do not look that bad.

They are simply part of the daily life in the area of the "Vieux port" of Marseille.

Once i was passing by as I do everyday and I saw a man with his son (11-12 years old) stopping by and having a chat with the ladies. The father obviously was talking about the boy and the ladies suddenly looked so motherly. They smiled the smile every woman which is a mother smile when they see a kid. The boy, like every other kid, that his parents produce him publically in front of other adults, was embarraced.

I wonder what will this kid think about these two big aunties around the corner when he will grow up, I wonder what was the father thinking (maybe preparing the background ?) I also wonder what would the mother think if she knew about this meeting.

Yes Marseille is obviously a very tollerant city…
